La restauración de la plaza Valentín Gómez Farías, en San Juan Mixcoac, permitirá el rescate de lo que aun queda de ese pueblo originario de la delegación Benito Juárez lleno de historia, tradición y leyendas –donde vivió Octavio Paz gran parte de su niñez y adolescencia-- que guarda todavía vestigios de las grandes mansiones con huertas que lo conformaban durante los años dorados del México porfiriano. Mientras el ya aprobado y financiado proyecto de restauración de la placita se pone en marcha, sin embargo, su deterioro continúa: las baldosas de sus calles están reventadas y hundidas, las banquetas rotas y la proliferación de vendedores ambulantes, basura y roedores se incrementa.
Malinantonco, como se llamaba originalmente en lengua náhuatl este pueblo de raíces prehispánicas, o San Juan Evangelista Malinaltongo como se denominó durante la Colonia, ha sido víctima a través de los años de una destrucción atroz, pero aun conserva el aliento de lo que fue su florecimiento como un barrio campestre en las afueras de la capital mexicana a finales del siglo XIX y principios del XX. San Juan Mixcoac, como hoy se llama, se ha reducido a sólo 22 manzanas, en las que hay doce calles, cuatro cerradas y un callejón. El centro del pueblo sigue siendo su hoy maltrecha placita, presidida por el templo de San Juan Evangelista y Santa María de Guadalupe, que data del siglo XVII. Según mapas de los años veintes del siglo pasado, San Juan era mucho más grande, pues abarcaba lo que hoy son las colonia Nochebuena y Ciudad de los Deportes y llegaba al Norte hasta el río Becerra (hoy avenida San Antonio) y al oriente hasta la avenida Insurgentes. En su jurisdicción se incluía el Parque Hundido, “que entonces era llamado el Parque Chino por las casitas de piedra, como pagodas, que había sobre las isletas de sus tres laguitos y a las que se llegaba por unos puentes de cemento”, según describe el maestro Alfonso Martínez Cabral, historiógrafo y académico de la Sociedad Mexicana de Geografía y Estadística, autor de una sorprendente monografía sobre este barrio.
Martínez Cabral menciona que en aquellos tiempos de su auge, las calles del pueblo de San Juan tenían otros nombres: Holbein se llamaba Córdoba; Augusto Rodín, avenida de San Juan; la cerrada de Rodín, callejón Violetas; Corot, calle del Pocito; Nattier, Jerusalén; Fragonard, Romeritos; Rubens, la Primera calle; Cuauhtémoc, la Segunda; Ireneo Paz y la calle de Millet, General José Ceballos; Carracci, Melchor Ocampo; Extremadura, calle del Ferrocarril; Revolución, avenida México; Patriotismo, avenida Tizapán Norte, y Porfirio Díaz era conocido como camino de San Ángel a la Piedad. Sólo Insurgentes y la calle Empresa conservaron sus mismos nombres. En los años cincuentas, San Juan seguía siendo el barrio florido y tranquilo en que se convirtió a principios de siglo cuando muchas familias porfirianas lo escogieron para establecer ahí sus casas de campo. Contaba ya con tres línea de autobuses para trasladarse al centro de la ciudad y tres líneas de tranvías: dos que venían de la colonia Guerrero, una a Mixcoac –que al regresar pasaba por toda la calle de San Juan—y otra que seguía toda la avenida Revolución, hasta San Ángel. La tercera, el Villa-Mixcoac, corría por Extremadura y Félix Cuevas, pasaba por la colonia Álamos, cruzaba el Centro y llegaba a la Basílica de Guadalupe. Como todo buen pueblo –escribe el académico, que vivió en este barrio-- San Juan tenía: seis tiendas de abarrotes, dos verdulerías, una tienda CEIMSA, dos pulquerías, una cantina, una tlapalería, una farmacia, una cocina económica, dos tortillerías, un molino para maíz, tres carnicerías, un expendio de tamales, la fabrica de galletas Mac'Ma, y una fabrica de cubitos para consomé Pollo Rico. Había también un expendio de petróleo y carbón, otro de leña y combustibles para boiler y tres panaderías; dos escuelas primarias para hombres (la Valentín Gómez Farías y la Escuela México, hoy Escuela Tabasco) y dos para mujeres (la Olavarría y Ferrari y la Independencia). Aunque el cine más cercano era el Reforma, a un lado del mercado de Mixcoac, los domingos había “cinito” en la Iglesia de San Juan, gratis para quienes tenían su boleto de la doctrina completo, o de a cincuenta centavos para los demás. Había, y hay, tres conventos, “y para escándalo de todas las familias, San Juan tuvo también su motel, el Nochebuena, sobre Porfirio Díaz casi frente al parque Chino o Hundido”, acota Martínez Cabral.
De todas las casonas de San Juan tres eran las más grandes y sobresalientes: al fondo de Nattier, la casa de los Canales; la de Valentín Gómez Farías en la plaza del mismo nombre y la de los Serralde, en Rubens y Revolución, donde actualmente funciona el antro Bull Dog. “De ellas, ésta última era espectacular: casona tipo morisco, con alto minarete, teniendo grandes jardines, un zoológico, frontón, cancha de tenis, un ruedo para torear y, sobre todo, una reproducción al detalle –en miniatura, estación por estación—de la ruta del ferrocarril mexicano México-Veracruz, cuya extensión era de más de cien metros de longitud”. Hoy sólo queda el recuerdo. De todas aquellas casonas, para 2003, cuando el historiógrafo hizo su trabajo, sólo quedaban en pie y ocupadas 19, dos más estaban abandonadas y otra en ruinas. En los últimos ocho años, la destrucción no ha cesado, por lo que seguramente su número se ha recudido. Había ya, en cambio, 45 edificios, 38 de ellos de departamentos. Por lo demás, San Juan Mixcoac ha sido reiteradamente cercenado, sobre todo por la construcción del circuito Interior en Patriotismo y en Revolución, convertidos en vías rápidas, y el eje 6 Sur Tintoreto-Holbein. La estrecha calle de Rubens-Ireneo Paz-Millet se ha convertido en una arteria de intenso tráfico de automovilistas que buscan una salida a Insurgentes.
