En pequeñas cantidades, las radiaciones ultravioleta son benéficas para la salud. Sin embargo la exposición excesiva a ellas trae como consecuencia diferentes tipos de enfermedades. La Organización Mundial de la Salud ha señalado que las radiaciones solares están vinculadas a diversos tipos de cáncer de piel, envejecimiento prematuro de la epidermis, cataratas y otras enfermedades oculares; y se ha comprobado que estas emisiones aminoran la eficacia del sistema inmunitario.

El Índice Ultravioleta solar mundial es un patrón internacional de radiaciones, cuyo objetivo es indicar la posibilidad de que se produzcan efectos nocivos sobre la salud y de las personas, aclarando que cuanto más alto es el valor de dicho índice, mayores son las posibilidades de que la piel y los ojos resulten lesionados, y menor es el tiempo necesario para que se produzca la lesión.

De acuerdo con estimaciones del Sistema de Monitoreo Atmosférico de la Ciudad de México, durante varios días del mes de agosto de este año se reportó la radiación solar como “extremadamente alta”, con un índice de 13 puntos de Rayos Ultravioleta, lo que representa diez puntos por encima del nivel a partir del cual se deben adoptar medidas de protección.

La Organización Mundial de la Salud recomienda proteger a los niños manteniéndolos en la sombra, utilizar bloqueador solar y limitar el tiempo que se pasa bajo el sol de mediodía. Sin embargo, en el Distrito Federal no existe control sobre la exposición solar a la que diariamente se enfrentan los alumnos de las escuelas capitalinas durante sus tiempos de receso o bien durante sus actividades deportivas. Sin duda es indispensable evitar la exposición excesiva de los niños y adolescentes a los rayos solares, a fin de evitar la aparición de cáncer en etapa posterior de la vida.

Pero también es importante que las autoridades educativas y gubernamentales se coordinen de tal manera que implementen medidas para proteger la piel de los niños y niñas en las escuelas del Distrito Federal. Una opción tendría que ser la colocación de mallas de sombra en los patios de los centros educativos de la capital, lo que ayudaría a prevenir las graves consecuencias que ocasionan las radiaciones solares y que amenazan constantemente nuestra salud.
